Since the end of 2020 I have been living in the
farming hamlet of Nancroix, Savoie, France,
located in the middle of one of the largest
ski areas in the world. In the cool basement of
our house you will find Studio Nancroix,
the only photo studio in the area.
The influence of humans on the landscape
is enormous here. The surrounding winter
playground has become a billion dollar industry.
The effects of climate change are palpable here.
There is much less precipitation than before
and due to the increased temperature,
the snow line and with it the glaciers are retreating.
Global warming turns what used to be a
certainty into an unpredicted future.
The interventions inside Studio Nancroix
are a reflection of how nature reacts on
human behavior outside. When it snows,
I let it snow inside and when it is warm outside,
I melt chunks of ice which seem to express
the pain they endure during the process.
Crumbling into precious diamonds.
At the end of the day we are left
with an imprint of melted water as if
it were the remains of a body just carried away.
